Types of Air Freight Options

Due to the inevitable changes happening around the world and the need to quickly send and receive different items between countries, the airline industry has given rise to a new shipping method: air freight.

Air freight is basically cargo divided into different categories to make transportation more organized and convenient. Some basic principles for categorizing air freight are:

1. Item Type
2. What is the size of the item, in terms of the number of items in the shipment and the size, and,
3. The number of days or hours it takes for a shipment to reach its desired destination.

Remittances are divided into the following categories:

Household goods include artwork, furniture, and other similar items that are primarily transported by household goods carriers (HHG) such as North American Van Lines and Bekins.

The "Express" category, on the other hand, includes personal items and small business goods that are often considered overnight shipments (or express shipments, express letters, and overnight express shipments). These transports are carried out by transport companies such as FedEx Express, UPS and DHL.

Since most items that fall into this category are relatively small and typically weigh no more than a few pounds, they are usually delivered in the carrier's own packaging.

Service levels vary depending on the service the carrier offers or the shipper's personal choice. They are typically shipped by air and may be delivered the same day they are sent to the carrier or may take several days of travel.

Packages that are slightly larger and heavier than express shipments are considered packages. 

This also includes shipping boxes, regardless of contents. Carriers such as UPS and FedEx Ground provide services for these types of freight. Packages include most business-to-consumer items and services and generally weigh no more than 100 pounds. Because they are relatively small, they are often included in the sender's or carrier's own packaging.

The types of services in this category also vary. However, some land vessels can travel 500 to 700 miles per day in approximately three to four days, depending on the service the shipper offers or the service option the customer has selected. These shipments generally do not travel by air, but rather by road and rail.

Freight shipments include the largest loads in the industry. It is divided into two main categories mainly: LTL of load larger than a truck and TL or truck.

Shipments less than truckloads are also called motorized freight. They often cover most business-to-business transactions. Services range from transporting items weighing 100 pounds to items as small as 15,000 pounds. Because LTL trailers are up to 28 inches long, most of these types of air freight cannot exceed this length.

Unlike smaller packages, shipments do not always come in corporate packaging.

Truck freight includes larger shipments from 15,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds with a maximum length of 53 inches. This type of air freight differs from all other categories because it normally does not stop during the journey and does not mix with other shipments. Most are often organized through freight brokers and online marketplaces.

When using this type of air freight, it is best that you fully understand all terms covered, including claims, pricing and insurance.
